Just different: Both are beneficial for weight training. Dumbbells allow greater range of motion and require the use of accessory muscles more. Barbells are more restrictive, but strengthen your primary muscle groups and are generally less likely to cause injury.

Depends!: Dumbells provide symmetry and will ensure both sides and muscle groups perform the same amount of work. This cannot be always said for barbells. A combination of using both is better than either alone as exercise!
