Acute vs. chronic: Acute sinusitis follows a viral infection usually with a 1 -2% chance of bacterial super-infection. Acute sinusitis by definition lasts no longer than 3 weeks with or without treatment. However chronic sinusitis may last for months and by definition lasts for more than 90 days. Sometimes surgery is necessary for the latter. See an ENT doctor for a specific diagnosis and treatment.
