Genetics: Most cases of adhd are inherited. There is great evidence to indicate that adhd is inherited and passed on for parent to child. Many factors can determine if inherited adhd will penetrate into clinically significant adhd, but it's genetic nature is indisputable.

A neurodevelopmental: Disorder: many studies in adults with adhd show insufficient circulating Dopamine in parts of the brain that inhibit behavior, from changes in structure/function of the Dopamine transporter gene or some Dopamine receptor genes. Risks for adhd go up with prenatal exposure to tobacco, alcohol & drugs, infections, low birth wt., many syndromes, & anything else that impacts brain development.

Neurochemical: ADHD is a result of a biochemical imbalance of brain transmitters. Dopamine and Nor Epinephrin levels have been found to be low in the brain in ADHD. The cause is usually inherited. It can be acquired as a result of brain trauma or infection. There are many causes of inattention which may mimic ADHD.
