To heal ulcers: Sucralfate, or carafate, (sucralfate) is given to coat the stomach lining and help ulcers heal by protecting the lining from stomach acid. It is usually given in combination with an antacid medication.

Stomach ulcers: Sucralfate works by forming a protective lining in the stomach to protect it from worsening or accumulating more ulcers. This medication should be taken on an empty stomach and antacids should be avoided for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication.
