A member asked:

Is it possible to get a uti while in the hospital?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Absolutely: Especially if you had a Foley catheter for more than 24 hours. Extended use of a Foley catheter is the single most common cause for a urinary tract infection among hospitalized patients (catheter associated uti, aka cauti). Thus we try to shorten the duration of catheter use and sometimes use prophylactic treatments to prevent uti.
