What is the difference between laparoscopy orlaparotomy surgery?

"Night and Day": Traditional "open" abdominal surgery(laparotomy)is performed thru a large incision enabling direct access to the abdominal organs.Laparoscopy is performed by making small incisions on the abdominal wall to insert a scope and instruments. The smaller the incision, the easier the recovery and (usually) the lower the risk. Minimally invasive (laparoscopic)surgery has revolutionized general surgery.

Small vs large : Laparoscopy means putting a camera in the belly and looking around. Laparotomy is a larger incision that allows the surgeon's naked eye to inspect and explore.

Different: Laparoscopy is when a telescope like instrument is placed through a lower navel incisions and the picture is displayed on the television screen. A laparotomy is when an actual incision approximately 4 to 6 inches is made on the abdomen and the pelvic organs are completely exposed for manual exploration.

Incision size: Laparoscopy is done with a scope and small incisions. Laparotomy is done with a larger incision that can accommodate the surgeons hands inside the abdomen or pelvis.
