Yes: Acl tears that are partial typically heal adequately without surgery and rarely tear completely later. Complete tears never heal spontaneously but a rare person can function without reconstruction. Most require surgery to make a new ligament, as the only means to a "cure". Acupuncture, prolotherapy, herbals, organics, prp, therapy, etc never cure acl tears.

Yes: Complete acl tears require surgery for those patients who have instability and pain, and for those athletes who need stability with lateral movements. Acl reconstruction is performed usually with the central third of the patellar tendon, and is done arthroscopically. Very successful operation.

Scope: Complete acl tears will not heal on their own. Arthroscopic acl reconstruction ('scope') uses a graft in place of the torn ligament and typically can help active individuals with knee instability return to their prior level of functioning.
