Refrain from watching the news or any highly excitable tv shows near bedtime.

No, not normal: I agree with some of the alternatives dr. Robbins shares, but you also need a good evaluation of your sleep problem. Lots of things could be contributing to this, and if not addressed, pills and supplements will not be effective in the long run. Please see your physician for this evaluation, and go from there. A sleep study may be indicated, or treatment for depression which interferes w/sleep.
