Temporary edema: During a workout the load on your muscles exceeds what they've been used to managing. This leads to microscopic tears in muscle fibers, which then need repairs. Prostaglandins, which are hormone-like chemicals produced by the body in response to these tears, cause an inflammatory response which results in the disposal of debris and building up of stronger muscle fibers--leading to muscle swelling.
