Cancer spread. : Metastasis is the spread of cancer from the place that it formed to other organs in the body. This usually is a bad sign prognostically, indicating more aggressive behavior. Some cancers can metastasize early, and others rarely do. The "stage" of cancer is determined by multiple factors, depending on the type of cancer. The presence of metastases often means a higher stage, worse prognosis.
