Diabetes and ketosis a bad combo?

4 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Ketosis: The production of ketones happens when you need to burn protein and fat for energy when you do not have enough Insulin to burn sugar which is our cleanest source of energy. You can get energy from ketones but the by-products you accumulate increase the acid level in your blood which shots down a lot of vital functions ultimately causing shock.

And how!: Diabetic ketosis and ketoacidosis imply decompensating diabetes control and may become a medical emergency. If you have diabetes and ketones, please contact your doctor right away.

No, unless ↓ insulin: Ketosis is just a state of burning fats. Since ↑ insulin, as in type 2 DM, promotes storage of ingested sugar as body fat, ↓ing sugar intake both ↓es Insulin output & body fat, helping turn the DM snowball around, thus ↓ing need for medications, physician visits & the many DM complications. Sadly, many physicians scare people to avoid ketosis; perhaps helps their business but not their clients.
