PLENTY: 1- trouble getting off ventilator 2- wheezing and spasms of the bronchial tubes 3- poor oxygen levels 4- respiratory failure 5- lung collapse 6- ending up in intensive care. Please make sure they know you smoke! and please quit asap pre operatively.

Smokers have : Pulmonary and airway related complications. Specifically, due to secretions they are at higher risk to develop pneumonia and have an irritable airway. Smoking can also cause cardiac and vascular problems. Best to stop of you can. Otherwise, at least disclose it to your doctors.

See below: You do need to tell the anesthesiologist about your smoking history. You will probably cough a lot after the surgery, and may have some reactive airway problems, wheezing, after the operation. You are at increased risk for other pulmonary complications, but if you disclose this to the anesthesiologist these problems can be averted.
