Should clomid (clomiphene) be combined with iui in couples with unexplained infertility? or is it okay to initiallly go with clomid (clomiphene) on its own?

Clomid (clomiphene) and IUI: It is definitely ok to use clonus and iuiit together. Cloned is used to induce ovulation. The IUI follows to increase chance of pregnancy. It is ok to go with Clomid (clomiphene) on its own , but IUI is used to help with conception.

Studies suggest...: Clomid (clomiphene) ovulation induction is combined with IUI based on evidence from older studies showing statistical improvement in success unexplained infertility. Nowadays, unexplained infertility should be a rare disagnosis indeed, but the cc/iui combination is still prudent and evidence-based. Newer studies emphasize the proven success of ivf for unexplained.

Better with IUI : Unless there is an ovulation problem, Clomid (clomiphene) alone will not substantially improve your chances for pregnancy nor will IUI without clomid (clomiphene). The two in combination have modest pregnancy rates for unexplained infertility but are still a reasonable first step.

It depends. : While it is not necessary to do IUI with Clomid (clomiphene) in cases of unexplained infertility, studies have shown higher success rates doing so compared to Clomid (clomiphene) alone. Age is a factor, but success rates with Clomid (clomiphene) alone is ~5% per cycle vs ~8% per cycle with Clomid (clomiphene) and iui.
