Primary care now: Gyn care is important to begin to consider for preadolescent and adolescent girls, as their bodies are changing. The recommendations about such things as pelvic exams and pap smears have changed such that in general they are not recommended as they used to be.On the other hand, regular visits with a family physician or pediatrician from infancy on are critical for good health and proactive care.

Depends on kid: Your pcp is an important resource for coordinating issues about your kids health care & depending on the situation few need to see an ob/gyn before their 20's. The aap other groups recommend first pelvic exams at 21 or 2 yrs after first intercourse unless problems arise. Full breast exams are seldom needed until the mid 20's.Kids can show personal growth by participating in this decision.

My question is why one is seeking a gyn exam. Pap tests for cervical cancer shouldn’t start before 21 years old regardless of age or sexual behavior. Unless you have vaginal discharge, discomfort with sex, or having pelvic or abdominal pain, a pelvic exam is NO LONGER part of a routine gyn appt!!! All birth control methods, except an IUD, DO NOT need, and should be prescribed without a pelvic!
