Saving a tooth.: The root canal is necessary because the nerve in the tooth is irreversibly damaged. An access is made to the middle of the tooth to remove the infected tissue, the canals are shaped, disinfected and filled usually with gutta percha. The access is sealed ( a post is sometimes placed) and a crown is commonly placed to restore, strengthen and protect the tooth.

Cleaning and Filling: A root canal is a procedure done to remove the source of a tooth problem without removing the tooth. Inside the tooth there is a chamber that contains the pulp. What an Endodontist will do is use small instruments, that are shaped like the pulp chamber and disinfectants to clean the chamber. After cleaning, a special filling is used to seal the clean pulp chambers in the roots.
