Depends on situation: If it is sudden, you probably need antibiotics. That is, if it is bacterial tonsillitis. If it is a cold, then they are not useful. If the tonsillitis is recurrent enough or chronic, tonsillectomy can save you many future illnesses. The tonsils sometimes just have small pits that harbor bacteria like the plaque in your teeth.
