Not uncomfortable: A colonoscopy is done under what is called "conscious sedation." this means you are given medication through an IV that makes you sleepy and controls pain but allows you to follow directions and protect your breathing. Patients generally are comfortable and don't even remember the procedure at all.

Depends...: Techniques of sedation vary widely, and "difficulty" of colonoscopy do too, depending on anatomy differences, previous surgeries, scar tissue and examiner technique. Discuss your concerns with whomever you choose to do it, and they should be able to allay your anxiety. Most peolpe do just fine with light sedation, but a few may need more anesthesia, often requiring an anesthesia provider.
