How are seizures treated?

Abort and Prevent: If a seizure is happening in front of you and not stopping on its own, abortive medication such as Ativan (lorazepam) or other sedatives can be used to stop it. To prevent seizures from occurring in the first place, we use a wide variety of medications that serve to reduce neuronal firing; some of these act by blocking excitatory pathways, some by activating inhibitory pathways, and some remain a mystery.

Appropriately: First the exact event needs to be defined. Next the most likely cause needs to be established. Then the risks for recurrence must be determined. Then an appropriate treatment plan can be developed. This takes the skill of a physician with the knowledge and experience for appropriate management of seizures.
