Dr. Meng Syn answered

Yes: If you are careful to not damage the temporary and it was made correctly, you should be ok for three weeks. The temporary keeps the prepped tooth and the adjacent teeth, stable so that the permanent crown will fit more precisely when the temporary is removed.

Yes: If well made out of a durable material, should be fine. If becomes sensitive, gums are irritated, food is trapping, or it gets loose, call the dentist right away. The provisional is a very important step in restoring the tooth.

Yes: The temporary material used is nowhere near as strong as the final crown (gold, porcelain, etc) but i've seen them hold up for a month or longer. Essentially your temporary crown should last awhile but it is important to notify your dentist if it comes off or breaks. This can change the fit of the final crown if that occurs.

Yes: With the new bis-gma resins used for temporary crowns, 3 weeks and longer is not a problem. A lab fabricated temporary crown can last for many months.

Yes: That is normal. Typically, a temporary crown is fabricated by your dentist after he prepares tooth for coverage and protection by a "permanent" crown. The temporary crown, which must be carefully fitted to prevent leakage and gum irritation, is generally worn several weeks while the "permanent" crown is fabricated by the dental lab. Three weeks is fine if temp. Crown is adequate.

Ask Dentist: 3 weeks is more than reasonable for most people, but there are many variables. Check with your Dentist.
