Does peripheral neuropathy reduce your lifespan?

8 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Not in itself: Neuropathy can increase yor risk of an ulcer or infection in your foot, but this risk can be minimized by performing daily skin checks of your feet. Imbalance from neuropathy can also increase your risk of fall. The underlying condition responsible for your neuropathy (like diabetes) is more likely to shorten your lifespan than neuropathy itself. It is a nuisance and a burden nonetheless.

Yes: Diabetic neuropathy is the most common and troublesome complication of diabetes mellitus, leading to great morbidity and mortality and resulting in a huge economic burden for diabetes care. It is the most common form of neuropathy in the developed countries of the world, accounts for more hospitalizations than all the other diabetic complications combined, and is responsible for many amputations.
