It is not: It is normal for the neutrophil number to wax and wane, but when this is in the very low, ie neutropenic, range it is potentially serious. Additional warning signs would be chronic mouth sores or recurrent bacterial infections.

Definitely not.....: Cyclic neutropenia is a specific and rare diagnosis that exists along a continuum of congenital neutropenias that include severe congenital neutropenia (scn). It is likely a functional variant of the latter, and harbors mutations in the same gene (elan) as scn. Pts are neutropenic ~every three weeks, and may have significant infection when counts are low. Be seen by a hematologist to confirm dx.
