Gender Identity Dx: You have gid if you're persistently uncomfortable with your sex, and strongly & persistently identify with the other gender. This is manifested by a stated desire to be the other sex, frequent passing as the other sex, desire to live or be treated as the other sex, or the conviction that you have the typical feelings and reactions of the other sex. All of this causes impairment in your daily life.

Transgender Care: There are health providers with experience caring for people who identify as transgender. You can find out if a provider is near you at wew.Glma.Com. You can review information at the ucsf transgender center of excellence website or transgendercare.Com. Going to a transgender support group can be a good place to learn more about other people's transgender experiences and issues. Good luck!

No More GID: The american psychiatric assn dropped the diagnosis "gender identity disorder" & replaced it w/much more neutral/less stigmatizing diagnosis "gender dysphoria." apa defines gd as sustained emotional distress over “a marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender & assigned gender.” 2 explore any gender dysphoria u may have or ur transgender-identification, see http://bit.Ly/10ta0kp.

There's a spectrum: There is a continuum of gender identity. Many people don't "fit" a binary view of male-to-female or female-to-male. You may find that you move along that continuum a bit. Do find a gender-friendly therapist in your area. if you have difficulty, look on the website of WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health). Good luck. LGromko MD
