Depends...: If you've recently had a bad illness, major surgery, or bad kidney problems, 8.6 may not be all that unusual. However, given that you are 30, an average healthy person would not have a hemoglobin that low. You should see your doctor to help find out why it has become that low and if there's anything further that you need to do.

New or old?: If your hemoglobin was 12 last week and now suddenly is 8.6 that could be dangerous and a sign of bleeding or destruction of red cells which if sudden can compromise body organ's oxygen supply. If the development of this hemoglobin was slow and chronic (over months or years) your body can adapt but you should definitely see a hematologist and your primary care dr soon.
