It depends: Chronic liver disease due to ? Many diseases: Chronic liver disease is an generalized term to describe any liver condition that affects the liver over time, of which there are many. Concerns regarding this are that if the condition is not treated, it may progress to liver scarring, otherwise known as cirrhosis.

...and cirrhosis can lead to liver cancer. The term chronic liver disease is often applied when the liver function blood tests are elevated for more than six months. This signals to your doctor that the disease is "chronic" and may not resolve spontaneously.

Maybe none: In esld (end-stage liver disease), much of liver has been replaced by scarring & may not repair itself. Some esld causes: viral infection (b, c, CMV are common), familial (hemochromatosis, wilson's, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, others), toxic/environmental/occupational, alcohol related. Has higher risk of liver cancer. If compensated, asymptomatic; get symptoms if progressive disease +/- alcohol.
