Purpose of cough...: Cough is a reflex that protects the airways and lungs from harmful matter that is inhaled. So, when the harmful particles in smoke are inhaled, the person coughs. But, eventually the smoke causes harm to the airways and this damages the cough reflex as well. A smoker who no longer coughs when they inhale smoke has damaged their airways and, without the cough reflex, more damage will occur!
