A member asked:

How does your diaphragm breathing and ribs change the volume of the lungs?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Changes volumes: Human lungs breathe via negative pressure - the diaphragm and if needed the accessory muscles of respiration (intercostal rib muscles, scalenes etc) deform to increase the intrathoracic volume - the lungs expand and you take a breath. Passively relaxing these muscles allow exhalation. You can also force your breath out actively but this is not normally necessary.
