Tricky question: Hydrocephalus involves too much water within the brain. It is usually caused by blockage of fluid drainage, and the only real treatment is placement of a shunt. Some cases respond to decreasing the production of brain water with diamox (acetazolamide). In acute brain trauma barbituate coma may help reduce brain pressure. In some cases the brain adjusts without need for shunt or medication.
