Could be: This is tough. Some of us (ahem) tell the same stories all the time anyways. However, a mild dementia is normal for 80 plus, and some argue all 80 plus suffer from this. That said, if he is clean, makes decent judgements, and can remember what to do in a car, then don't panic. You can feel free to discuss the issues with his doctor and determine if he's still safe to drive.

Could be: This can be a sign of dementia. The best thing is to try this test: have him repeat 3 random words and memorize them. Then spell world then spell it backwards. Now ask him to recall those 3 words. If he can't, he'll need further testing by his doctor. Don't take his license away unless you feel unsafe in the car with him, for now.
