Initially, either OK: Orthopaedic surgeons, primary care physicians (family practice included), or physiotherapists specializing in the management of sports medicine injuries can all be qualified initial evaluators of knee pain. Once your history, exam, & imaging studies (if indicated) point toward a specific injury/diagnosis, you may need to be referred to a physician or surgeon specializing in treating your injury.

Sports doc: I would start with a sports medicine doctor, as they have the training to make sure you don't have something seriously wrong. This may include XR or MRI if indicated. If safe, you may then be referred to a physiotherapist to help you return to function
