One working 4 you : The best medicine for any condition is the one that works well for you without causing significant side effects/dependency, and you can afford it. There are quite a few available now, but depends on what type of sleep trouble you have--some can't fall asleep, others wake in middle of night or too early in am etc..Talk to your doc for appropriate rx. U may only need sleep hygiene. Good luck.

Prevention: Not being able to sleep may indicated sleep problems that can be life shortening or life threatening. The only way to know if there are serious problems is with an overnight sleep test. I encourage you to seek help.

Insomnia: There is acute insomnia or chronic insomnia, acute insomnia is less than 3 months and chronic is more than 3 to 6 months please identify the stressor that caused this, it could be move to a different time zone, financial, relation stress etc. Google sleep hygiene you may need short term meds like ambien cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia works best according to studies.

A generalized : approach is best. Sleep hygiene is key. Retire & rise same time each day. Bedroom should be dark & cool - used only for sex & sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs & no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. Dinner should be moderate sized & finished at least 2 to 3 hours before sleep.
