Scoliosis: Sounds like you are referring to scoliosis. It is a condition that causes the spine to curve like an 's' shape. A simple xray and exam can determine what treatment would be necessary, if at all. Treatment can range from exercise, bracing, and lastly surgery. It all depends on the degree of curvature, how much it has progressed over time, and if your daughter is still growing.

Usually not: Most curves in pediatric population are either a scoliosis (curvature noted looking at the back) or kyphosis (increased roundness of upper back seen from side) which for most are treated by observation, occasionally by bracing and in 1%, by surgery. Occasionally, we see a left sided scoliosis curve that may suggest a further neurologic workup.

Probable scoliosis: A curvature of the spine that is greater than 10 degrees is known as scoliosis. The treatment of which is dependent on the skeletal maturity of your daughter and the size of her curvature. Many patients can be treated non operatively. Thank you for your question.
