Complex.: Hepatitis b and c are the two most common viral causes of hepatitis. They are acquired from sexual contact or needle sharing. Approximately 12-20% of those with hepatitis b and up to 50% of those with hepatitis C infection will eventually develop cirrhosis. Cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver, can lead to liver failure.

Cause effect: Viral hepatitis (b and c) if left untreated and unchecked for a period of time can continue to damage the liver leading to inflammation and scarring. Significant scarring is known as cirrhosis. Cirrhosis can lead to other issues including bleeding, swelling, jaundice (yellowing) and liver cancer.
