Depends on curve : It is not unusual to have a rib hump with a rhoracic level curve as a scoliosis is a twisting of the spine rather than a bending like coiling a rope. You would treat the rib hump at the time of correcting the scoliosis if surgery were indicated. Sometimes, there are procedures directed at correcting the rib deformity for cosmetic reasons.

Multiple ways: Look for an abnormal hump of the ribs along the back - especially when you bend forward. Also look to see if one shoulder is higher than the other when standing. If you suspect an abnormality, discuss it with your doctor.

Orthopedic surgeon: A surgeon that specializes in spine surgery or pediatric orthopedics would be the best to evaluate the scoliotic curve for treatment recommendations depending on the severity of the curve the physician may recommend physical therapy, bracing or surgery.

A 40-year-old member asked:
What symptoms would indicate that I have scoliosis?

Few symptoms: Scoliosis in adolescents is rarely painful. The most common symptom is noticing that one shoulder may be higher than the other in the mirror. From behind some people can notice that there is a curve to the spine or one scapula is more prominent. Also, the trunk may be shifted to one side or the other. If any of these signs are noticed, seeing an orthopedist and obtaining x-rays would be needed.
