Ferritin: Ferritin measures the amount of iron storage in the body and usually is really low in iron deficiency anemia, contrary to anemia of chronic disease that usually shows a normal ferritin level. There are other parameters to take into account off course but this one is one of the best to differentiate.

Serum ferritin: However, ferritin is also an acute phase reactant so it can be falsley elevated in times of inflammation. So if that is the case, then get a blood test called soluble transferrin receptor. Hope this helps.
