Depends: Depends on the cause. Hypothyroid due to an inflamed thyroid may go away once the infection/inflammation is over. Hypothyroid due to an autoimmune process (hashimoto's) or due to surgical removal of the thyroid will not go away but can be controlled by thyroid hormone replacement.

Not usually: It depends on the cause. Autoimmune hypothyroidism (aka hashimoto's) does not typically go away. Some other causes might. Regardless, the medication (levothyroxine) used to treat the condition is safe and does not have any real side effects.
