Cardiovascular event: Hdl is a secondary goal in cholesterol (lipid) management (primary goal is ldl). Average risk is HDL 40-60. You can "subtract" a risk factor if your HDL >60. But HDL <40 is considered another risk factor for heart disease & stroke. No medications have demonstrated any outcome benefit by raising hdl, so i'd focus on exercise instead. Plus look for causes that might drive down your hdl.

Complicated: Low hdl-c may be related to risk as a marker of other factors associated with cardiovascular disease (cvd) such as high LDL particle number (ldl-p), Insulin resistance, and obesity. Also, low hdl-c may indicate a low HDL particle number (hdl-p). Recent research shows if hdl-c and hdl-p are both low, cvd risk is increased. If hdl-c is low, but hdl-p is high, cvd risk is not increased.

Heart disease.: A low HDL count is an independent risk factors for heart disease. The best way to raise cardioprotective HDL is cardiovascular exercise. Shoot for forty or forty-five minutes daily. Supplementation with no-flush Niacin may help as well, 2000 to 3000mg daily in divided doses. Fish oil supplements may help this as well, as healthy fats can raise the HDL.
