Can't make memory: The parts of the brain involved with making new memories (hippocampus and its connections) function less well with age and with disorders such as alzheimer's. Once a memory has become set in the brain (consolidated) the memory areas are not needed to access the information. Thus memory loss usually affects newer more than older memories.
