Big difference: Interstitial cystitis is a problem where the lining of the bladder is dysfunctional and allows urine to "leak" into the muscle of the bladder causing pain, urgency and frequency. Urinary retention is a problem when the bladder either doen't empty at all or has incomplete emptying.
