Is there a difference between strep throat and losing your voice?

Yes.: Strep usually affects the upper throat; vocal cords are lower, and people who lose voice with strep usually have an abscess in their neck from the strep infection - or laryngitis, which is a different (viral) infection altogether.

Losing your voice (laryngitis) is an inflammation of the larynx of the throat that is usually due to a virus. With strept throat, there is painful swallowing and often fever. With laryngitis, the throat is not very sore and there is no fever.
