Aging and sun.: Both natural aging with time and sun exposure over time contributing to thinning of the skin. This is seen easily on the arms and hands in older individuals who have gotten a lot of exposure with driving cars. Thinned skin is more easily traumatized and bruised. Over enough time with repetitive bruising to thin skinned areas, the skin will darken due to deposition of hemosiderin pigment.
