A member asked:

Is it recommended to get a precautionary prostatectomy for men with family history of prostate cancer?

No: Nobody's shown that this works, prostate cancer really doesn't run in families much, and very few men want to lose the ability ejaculate at any age.

NO!: It's not even definite in men with prostate cancer. You should get and exam and psa yearly starting at age 40. If you have symptoms see your doctor sooner.

Nope.: That is a very important question. There are no tests to predict if men will get clinically significant prostate cancer even with a family history, necessitating a prostatectomy prior to cancer rearing its head. Currently, prophylactic prostatectomies are not indicated for those with family history. A visit to the urologist for a basic evaluation would be a great idea though.
