I am not aware: Of any association of weightlifting with hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia is remarkably different than other abdominal wall hernias. A hh is a hernia between two body compartments, and the avoidance of weightlifting to my knowledge is of little significance in this type of hernia.

Depends: The cause of a hiatal hernia is rarely identifiable. In other words, I am not sure you can say with certainty that weightlifting caused your hiatal hernia, which is quite common, and usually asymptomatic and low risk to get worse. Many non-weightlifters have a hiatal hernia. Base your decision to lift weights on your symptoms. If it bothers you, ease up. Too much, see a general surgeon.
