Often the first step: Family physicians can certainly help with some mental illnesses. When these are more severe, complex, or the initial trials of medicines don't work, they generally refer to psychiatrists. Also, a family physician will most likely not be doing psychotherapeutic treatments -- which are very important in many psychiatric conditions. Some have done combined fp/psychiatry residencies, though.
