A member asked:

If i have rheumatic fever, will i be treated by my family physician or will i be referred to a specialist of some kind?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depemds: Many primary care physicians are adequately trained to deal with rheumatic fever. However, not all in the us have seen this increasingly vanishing illness, therefore you will find occasional ones who don't feel comfortable treating and thus refer on to either an infectious disease specialist . Not all cases of this lead to heart disease, but those that do should see a cardiologist.
