Lab and physical : Lab work that at the least should include a T3 (liothyronine) or T4 level with a tsh. These are different forms of thyroid (active or not) and thyroid stimulating hormone. A more comprehensive lab test would include the sex hormones and a review of the adrenal hormones.

Hypothyroidism: Low thyroid hormone is best treated with synthetic replacement medication orally. Levothyroxine has been around for years and is both safe and effective. An endocrinologist is best to initiate and follow treatment.
