How possible is it that counselors and doctors can overlook bipolarism?

It can be subtle: Bipolar disorder has several features that make it hard to diagnose at times. Mood variability does not have to be dramatic (hypomania is one of the few psychiatric states that may have no disability). Bipolar often is something that the affected person is not aware of. When you are in one mood state (depression) your brain forgets things that happened when you were in a different state (mania).
