Hard to say: Hard to say without an examination. Possibilities could include, various types of arthritis, gout, carpal tunnel syndrome. I would probably suspect carpal tunnel syndrome first. See your doctor who can determine the cause and steer you to the best treatment.

Many reasons: There are many reasons with osteoarthritis from general wear and tear being the most likely explanation. However there a the many other potential causes that may be an indication if systemic disease that will benefit from evaluation and treatment.
