The most serious one in absence of trauma is irritation of the meninges ( membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord). This irritation (meningitis) can be caused by infection, inflammation or bleeding. Any person with intense neck stiffness/head aches should be taken immediately to an er to rule out these potentially fatal problems.
