Exam or labwork: Cervicitis is usually caused by either chlamydia or gonorrhea. This can be detected by doing a vaginal swab to test for those things, and they can also be tested from urine. Sometimes a doctor can also tell based on a pelvic exam and may treat you based on that. Treatment consists of antibiotics.
