Tampons: Tampons are the usual culprit in toxic shock. They can get contaminated during insertion, they can scratch the skin, opening the door for bacteria to get in.

Tampons, etc.: Toxic Shock syndrome caused by bacteria that produce a toxin. It is fortunately very rare. About 1/3 of cases are related to foreign things in men. (So it isn't just tampons!) Tampons left in too long can become colonized with bacteria that produce the toxin. You can prevent it by making sure a tampon isn't in longer than 4-8 hours. Best wishes!
